Defining Streetwear

This post is dedicated to deepening the streetwear style and also to the fact that doing various researches I discovered that this style derives from the world of skate and punk. So it made me reflect on the fact that the manga I was inspired by for this project is based very much on the punk style, in fact in the previous post I talked to you about how the manga is inspired by Vivienne Westwood's promoter of this style. In the seventies, in fact, Vivienne Westwood helped to create the punk style, with extravagant and provocative creations, her style became the uniform of the punk movement also approved by the Sex Pistols band (as the companion of the manager of this band that made history) who it was distinguished by the aggressive look characterized by perforated sweaters, brooches, studs, cut t-shirts that carried provocative images, the trousers were decorated with chains and straps, moreover, leather and rubber were introduced as unconventional materials.

Street fashion was born around the 70s and early 80s; initially, it was a sub-culture born in the West-Coast belonging to the world of Skate and Punk and they were part of the young people who conceived a real way of dressing linked to the street, from this, in fact, the name street, and it was their way of being. They defined their dress codes without looking at the suggestions of haute couture but taking inspiration from the environment in which they lived. The most emblematic example is Punk, violent and free from any convention, which transforms clothes into broken and tattered, deliberately worn.
Streetwear is an informal and youthful style of clothing, typical of boys who practice rap, skate, and breakdance.
Over the years, streetwear has undergone many influences from different worlds and cultures, and the world of graffiti has had the greatest influence, especially hip-hop, and to date, the hip-hop-streetwear association, is the most widespread. To define it are the Run DMC: tracksuits in acetate with side stripes, solid color T-shirts, felt hats, gold necklaces with large pendants, and sneakers; exactly the clothes are worn in the Bronx.

One of the first streetwear brands, still very popular today, is Stussy, founded by Shawn Stussy in the early 80s and is considered as the first streetwear brand as it was one of the first to express the passion for this subculture. Shawn Stussy was born in 1954 and began his career in the early 1980s in Laguna Beach, California, producing surfboards and T-shirts with his surname printed. In 1984 the logo was born and subsequently the first New York store, opened together with James Jebbia, future founder of Supreme. The case of Stussy is interesting because he managed to commercialize a lifestyle and this makes him the initiator of the streetwear movement.
Stussy's idea marked an epochal change in the world of fashion, his brand, in a very short time, spread all over the world, earning millions and giving life to a worldwide phenomenon, a creed. All this has led to the birth of other brands that have marked the history of this culture; brands such as Supreme or Adidas and Nike, which produce sportswear but not to be used exclusively for sports. An example was sneakers, the sneaker that has become something every day, something to wear not only for sports; thus they become a fundamental element in street clothing.

It has the punch of punk rock influence and yet can pair seamlessly with the glamorous, clean styles of high fashion. The fact that streetwear in and of itself is a hard genre to define means there are countless opportunities to experiment with the style, as the look is constantly changing and evolving. In fact, with this post, I want to make it clear that the streetwear style, therefore, depends on us and how we want to represent ourselves or even what we want to express both through the materials but also through the type of garments and above all also by the writings themselves. In the next post, I will start to publish my drawings of how I represented my street style in this collection and how I represented it by inspiring this magnificent manga that makes me dream every time. Interesting how every time I continue to develop my project I can find new information.

This research also leads me to broaden my horizons on my collection by being able to add a pinch of punk style just to inspire me even more to manga and represent the story even better through my small collection.
