When Art Meets Fashion
Some Collaborations
Yves Saint Laurent and Van Gogh
Yves Saint Laurent once again did not fail to show his passion as an art collector and in 1988 I presented an entire line inspired by two famous masterpieces by the artist Vincent Van Gogh, "the Irises" and "the Sunflowers". YSL was also the first to introduce “animalier” fabrics in the collections and to show models of color.
Source of inspiration for style, Yves Saint Laurent's work is art. Stylist and collector of works, his creativity has often drawn the lifeblood of his paintings: Georges Braque's birds, Delacroix's odalisques, or Mondrian's geometries. The garment, one of the four pieces made, was purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and only a few days ago was auctioned by Christie's for 382,000 euros. The Iris variant, always inspired by Van Gogh's paintings, was sold for 175 thousand euros last January.
In my research then I thought that surely there will have been several corroborations of fashion designers with artistic works so I started to inquire to see how other fashion designers took inspiration from the works of art and how their final result was then. I am aware that I am far behind with my project, but now that I have started to have clearer ideas about the work I want to do, I will try to increase the pace in order to achieve a final result that satisfies me. For now, in the next two days I would like to focus on some research both for the development of my work but also to see how art has inspired fashion.
