Research Class Exercise
Class Research
Name something you have researched in the past for art, design, or media.
Explain how you researched this
What fact did you discover?
What new conclusion did you establish?
So I did this research at the time of high school when I was also studying art and my teacher had given each of us to look for a painter and at the same time, in addition to doing some research on google, she advised us to go and see videos on YouTube of some art critics, this to understand how to comment on the works.
Johann Heinrich Füssli What facts did you discover?
I went to deepen his conception of art and what he wants to express and study in his works. He was considered a proto-symbolist and a forerunner of Expressionism. Born in Zurich in 1741. The hostility of the Zurich environment forced him to leave Switzerland and thus began a period of wanderings and journeys, essential for his education. Fussli, with his painting, became the bearer of a world made of dreams and nightmares. A visionary world, which has its roots in the imagination, a visionary, hallucinatory world, created by the stupor due to the loss of man's certainties towards reason and history. The artist feels bewildered and deeply moved by the greatness of ancient artists, who can never be equaled and are part of a distant past. He with his visionary gift can be considered as the forerunner of many art trends to come, from the Romantics to the Symbolists, up to the Breton Surrealists. All these currents will look to him as a teacher to be inspired by.
What NEW conclusions did you establish?
I have not necessarily established new conclusions, but I have carefully looked at what he is studying at that time or the dream and as philosophers, I also take it as an example. How his ideas continue to inspire painters of ages ahead without ever falling into the banal, and importantly, his concepts remain current and studied even now. Now, I will discuss what I think of his works. So to start I will outline an example of how he views the world so that the context of the research is clear. My main project is the lockdown period but how it will be dealt with during Christmas, so I chose this painter as inspiration for the vision of this world, as this period resembles a dream full of nightmares, so inspired by him too I will look for a vision of the world in this case contrary or positive by making a shooting through face time and interviewing the models to understand their thoughts and feelings of this period. So to represent this dream that has now lasted a year and probably will go further but that we will not be discouraged in front of all this, as instead Fussli did in front of classical art.
Research into my major project
Being a particular Christmas, and being the first time that there are restrictions for the exit, due to Covid-19, I obviously cannot take inspiration from the classic Christmas period and from previous projects; but I have considered a film that can also be interpreted in an alternative way and in which I can take inspiration to create the Christmas period. The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Barton. The protagonist Jack is tired of the period he lives in-, in this case of Halloween, he has a void that he cannot fill but that thanks to Christmas he manages to find that happiness and that desire to live. We hope that Christmas will also give us this effect during this period. There are two songs that represent these moods that I wanted to emphasize and therefore take as inspiration in my project:
Jack's Lament and What is this
I was inspired by these because as soon as he sees the city of Christmas he does not know what it is and therefore he interprets it in his own way and for this reason, I want my models to tell me the emotions of this particular Christmas.
Research through my major project
I will be using photoshop as an editing tool for my project, but I will also be looking for other editing tools online, I am very curious about apple's new photo apps so I will do some research on these. I will try for creating Lucidpress publishing instead since last year I used yumpu to create a digital magazine but I was not happy, this time I would like to test Lucidpress for both creating the page design and merging it all instead to use photoshop for design. Although for editing I will definitely use it.
Research for my major project
In this area, I will examine the old prints of magazines and companies such as Moschino, Dior, Gucci ... What they usually published and what was the concept of their projects. In addition, I will examine this year's Dior collection based on Homeware. Moreover, I will look at some trends this year and I will recommend some of these to my models to be able to take inspiration.
Dior and Homewear: The capsule collection to stay at home.
Good work on this very detailed and considered
